PETROLEUM CAUSES HAZARDOUS LONG EFFECTS THAT CAN AFFECT
THE ENVIRONMENT FOR DECADES
Oil dependency is an ever-increasing global problem that affects us all and destroys
the environment. The long term effects of the Gulf oil spill give ample evidence of the
devastating impact petroleum has on human as well as plant and animal life.
Consumers are as much to blame for these problems as the big companies and
governments. It is the consumer who makes the ultimate choice of using petroleum-
based products instead of other eco-friendly alternatives.

DEFORESTATION
The problem is we are destroying this system in two major ways; not only are we
tasking the system by over-polluting, we are also sabotaging it through
deforestation and other means.

PRINTING INDUSTRY
"The printing industry is the single largest air polluter and the third-largest consumer
of fossil fuels in the world after automobiles and steel manufacturing," said Renourish
Founder and University of Illinois Design Professor Eric Benson. "On a typical day,
(printers) use trillions of gallons of water that must be treated for its toxic chemical
content and released back into our waterways." In today’s world, we are directly or
indirectly a part of the printing and paper industry.

In today’s world, we are all directly or indirectly a part of the printing and paper industry.

ILLEGAL  AND IMMORAL LOGGING
Deforestation is the second largest contributor to the climate crisis after the
burning of fossil fuels. The trees are the second largest cleansers of CO2 after the
oceans, but its effects don’t end there.

FISH AND ANIMALS DYING
In Haiti, which is 98% deforested, the corrosion caused by the lack of trees is
turning the land barren and is even killing fish in the surrounding waters. This, in
turn, further contributes to the rise of poverty and disease.

CLIMATE CHANGE
The resulting climate crisis is causing stronger storms, drought, and the melting of
the ice caps; not to mention the extinction of many animals that depended on the
climate’s delicate balance.

Climate Change is an immediate threat to our planet that must be addressed now.
